This is the American made Palstar R30 ham and shortwave receiver that has created a lot of buzz among enthusiasts over the years. This unit comes with a copy of the user manual, low noise linear AC adapter, and a couple of reviews and promotional copies of the receiver.
Over the years, Palstar has manufactured the R30 receiver in a variety of incarnations. There was this unit which employs dual Murata filters, another unit that offers one Murata and one Collins filter, and yet another that offers 2 Collins filters. Some people prefer the Collins filters due to the steeper filter skirts that allow for sharper selectivity. However, others prefer the use of the Murata filters which enable better audio. Over the years, we have chatted with a couple of owners who prefer the Murata filters and have conveyed the audio from the rear panel outputs to a home stereo receiver where they inform us that the audio is second to none to any other communications receiver. Imagine hearing good mediumwave or shortwave playing through your home stereo equipment with a fullness that you will never hear with other communications receivers.
This R30 is the original incarnation of the receiver and we less commonly have one to offer with the dual Murata filters. A previous owner has done some restoration to this receiver partly necessitated by use. Here is what was restored to return the receiver to factory operation:
replaced tuning encoder (the original was developing some looseness/play in the bearing)
replaced the display (to restore intensity of the characters on the readout)
Palstar has been manufacturing a version of the R30 for a number of years and the acceptance within the shortwave community has been very warm. If you like a shortwave receiver that has loads of buttons and controls, the R30 will seem disappointing to you. The designer has gone to lengths to make this an easy to use receiver, but also a strong performer. That means it does not include some of the bells and whistles that users often expect, but sometimes seldom use. We compare receivers with a lot of front panel controls to the typical TV or DVD that has a lot of remote control buttons, but which only about 20% of them are used with any frequency. As a result, the folks at Palstar have taken the time to make this a very user friendly unit. If you are intimidated by some of the complex receivers and their controls, the simplicity of the Palstar R30 should appeal to you.
The R30 series of receivers has often been compared to another popular receiver....the L*owe HF*150. We know that there is a danger whenever receivers are compared, but there are obvious similarities. Here is a brief list of those similarities:
Both units are relatively small in size
Both have robust cabinets
Both have excellent audio, especially for the size of the cabinet
Both lack a keypad, but have rapid tuning features to overcome any perceived tuning difficulties
Both have been designed toward simplicity
Both have the ability to operate off of a handful of AA batteries for portable use
Both emphasize substance over style
Both have been reviewed favorably despite their offering of minimal features
There may be more things to compare, but you get the idea of our comparison. The Palstar products are manufactured in Ohio by a small firm that represents the best of what America has brought forth with regards to a small business and the entrepreneurial spirit of our society. The proof of this type of manufacturing, as they say, is in the pudding. Here is a link to the reviews by other users of the R30 on Eham:

If you should ever need to phone Palstar with any questions, don't be surprised if the owner, Paul Hrivnak, should answer the phone. It is common for the President of Palstar to be the one to field your questions (or for his wife to answer the phone to assist you).
Despite its simplicity, the R30 has some excellent features:
Powerful audio using a 5 watt amp
Two tuning speeds that adjust quicker as you tune the knob faster
100 memory positions
Fast / Slow AGC
AM / USB / LSB modes
Fast tune slew buttons move at 500 khz per push
Headphone jack
Internal battery compartment for portable DX use
Dial light button to preserve batteries during portable use
Coverage from 100 KHz up to 30 MHz
Murata filter for 6 and 2.5 KHz filters in all modes
Attenuator for strong signals
Analog S meter for accurate signal strength recognition
Bail tilt bar to angle the R30 for best user operation
One of the nice features of this R30 is that as a small tabletop receiver it can be used for portable listening. You would not tote it to the ballpark, but you would be able to take it to the cabin, the RV, or just a hike in the woods. You would need to make a provision for a receiving antenna like temporarily stringing a long wire, but this can be done in a matter of minutes for such applications. The receiver uses AA batteries in series and once installed you could enjoy an afternoon or an evening of DXing at a favorite spot. We have removed the top cover and taken a picture of the battery tray which you can view in our set of pictures found at the top of this listing.
We have been told that the audio section of the R30 series of receivers is outstanding and that it really shines if you don't rely on the internal speaker, but instead, export the sound to your home stereo receiver. While we have never done this exporting the audio to a home entertainment system, the idea intrigues us and a couple of seasoned shortwave hobbyists have informed us of the wonderful Palstar audio. It has been shared with us that the audio that results is amazing and that listening to favorite shortwave broadcast stations offers an even higher level of enjoyment.
Palstar replaced this R30 with a newer receiver, the R30A which formerly retailed for 9.95, but has now also been discontinued. The main difference between the R30 and the R30A is that the Collins filters were now standard, not optional as in the earlier R30 model. Also, there was a need to redesign the front panel since the encoder became unavailable. Thus, Palstar recessed the main tuning knob into the front panel. While this is promoted by Palstar as the "improved" version, many DXers prefer the original tuning knob that you could grip on the outside edge and feel that this model....the earlier R30 is the favored version to own and where you can put your fingers around the tuning knob to grip and scan the frequencies. Reception of the R30 in the DX community has been quite good and this receiver is said to be especially hot on the Medium Wave band, though it is sensitive throughout its entire receiving range.
