Description
This item is the VC-20 or VHF converter for that Kenwood R-5000 receiver that you may have. The VC-20 has been tested and operates quite well. Once installed, the frequencies will appear on the readout like the HF frequencies. The range for the converter is 108 to 174 MHz which allows the receiver to have expanded frequencies to pick up local emergency channels, air communications, national (NOAA) weather channels, and amateur radio band of 2 meters. For some people, being able to pick up those upper frequencies is not important, but for others, it will bring a whole new facet for their listening and expand the capabilities of their Kenwood.
The VC-20 is pretty easy to install and comes with an installation sheet to guide you in the process. The module secures inside with 2 brackets and the 4 rear panel screws fasten it securely to the rear panel of the receiver. You do not require anything but a properly sized Phillips head screwdriver to install and about 30 minutes of time. Basically, you remove the top cover of the Kenwood R-5000, attach the 3 cables inside the Kenwood to the VC-20 specifically for that purpose, and then mount it using the included screws. Finally you replace the cover and then you are ready to use the VHF unit. This is not a technical installation and should be able to be performed by even the least technical person as it requires no soldering.
If you look at the picture, you will see that the VC-20 is in good overall condition. We have tested this VC-20 and it operates beautifully with great sensitivity!
