    Description

    For Sale:
YMMV but I just think this is a beautiful radio for its vintage.  It is a Crosby Type 166 SSB receiver contracted by and made for the famous Harbor Bay Fur Trading Company in Canada.  Crosby, the name of the principal engineer & designer produced these in small quantities to distribute first to the two dozen or so outposts across the Canadian northern territories.  Production was in the mid-1950's when Crosby helped pioneer the reception and transmission of SSB.  The purpose was to improve communications reliability and accessibility between HBC trading posts or outposts.  These receivers are quite rare and they were all made in the U.S.A.!
The 166 receives SSB, DSB, and CW.  Using a standard 455 kc IF, it's signal processing is directed through the Collins 3.1 kc mechanical filter.  The frequency control is done by a stable VFO but has three Crystal controlled channels which are independently selectable.  Covering 1.5 mc to 7.5 mc, it is an uncommon "Lower HF" receiver.  This does provide coverage of 160 meters, 80 meters and 40 meters.  Audio is available via the front panel speaker or a headphone jack.  An octal socket on the rear allows for connection to a transmit/receive relay.  The front panel is 9" x 19" and the receiver is about 16" deep not counting knobs or fuse holders, etc.
If you are looking for an ideal retro or novice station receiver and favor the lower HF radio bands, give this serious consideration.  You not only have the tunable VFO but it has three crystal frequency positions you can equip for regular go to frequencies.  (If you DIY, add QST's 3 band HF down-converter to add 20, 15 & 10 meters or any three WARC bands).
Tired of cleaning and refinishing?  This may be the radio for you.
    Condition:
Used, Untested and Immaculately clean.  Any normal handling creates scratches & rubs no matter how careful the handler is.  Those are inevitable & buyer should be aware that moving the radio safely is more a concern during handling than the paint.  The small scratches are not unsightly and should not be noticeable after set up.  The main issue we saw was paint removed around the rack mount side mounting holes.  Another inevitable result of receiver handling by end users.  Otherwise, this is as nice a tube radio as we have ever come across.
The switches switch, the dials turn, it looks physically superb.  We are electing NOT to power it as radios this rare deserve their day in court: they deserve to have their power supply & electrolytics checked first.
We recommend you use a bucking transformer to protect the circuit from our modern 123VAC voltage level.
See photos and ask questions.  Sold Strictly AS IS.  Manual documentation supplied on CD.
    CAUTION
:  This radio requires lethal voltages and generates lethal voltages.  If you are new to tube radio's, get the assistance of a trained professional service tech to provide service & support BEFORE you power this up.  Never touch anything when it is powered up.
