Description
Circa 1920’s HOPI Brocaded Dance Sash # 1Two panels consisting of
finely
hand-woven of cotton yarn and decorated using brocade weaving method with weft brocading of red, green and black aniline dyed wool illustrating the ‘Broad Face’ Katsina (Kachina).
T
his is my oldest brocaded sash. I would say it dates to the 20s. The weave in both parts is exceptional. I think the cotton is a mix of homespun and commercial where most are purely commercial. The pink yarn used to join the panels is certainly newer (pink yarn replaced with trading post cotton string). Each panel measures about 9 inches by 39 inches, not counting the fringes. There is very minor bleeding, staining and discoloring from age and use.
Normal wear, tear and losses commensurate with age of artifact.
